Frenectomy Treatment in Mackay

A frenectomy is a procedure to release a tight or restrictive frenulum, which is the small band of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth (lingual frenectomy) or the upper lip to the gum (labial frenectomy). It’s one of the most common treatments for tongue tie and lip tie.

There are several approaches to performing a frenectomy. The best option depends on the patient’s age, the type and severity of the restriction, and the clinical situation.

Laser frenectomy — Uses laser technology to release the tissue. The laser cauterises as it works, which may reduce bleeding. Sutures are typically not required. Multiple ties can be addressed in a single appointment when appropriate.

Scissor or scalpel frenectomy — A direct surgical release using instruments. This approach allows clear visualisation of the tissue during the procedure. Sutures may be required depending on the tissue thickness and location.

Surgical release with reconstruction — Used for thicker or more complex restrictions, particularly in older children and adults. This typically involves suturing and may be performed under general anaesthesia.

For infants, a frenectomy is typically a quick procedure. Older children and adults may receive local anaesthetic or, in some cases, general anaesthesia depending on the complexity.

After the procedure, post-care stretching exercises are essential. These help the area heal properly and reduce the chance of the tissue reattaching. Your care team will provide clear, step-by-step aftercare instructions.

Depending on the individual situation, we may recommend follow-up with:

• A lactation consultant (for infants with feeding difficulties)
• A speech pathologist (for children with speech concerns)
• A myofunctional therapist (for adults retraining oral muscle patterns)
